First Impressions Count!

Don't let your sign send the wrong message

My custom designed hand carved stone signs spell quality

What does your sign say about you? Well, think about it for a moment; a sign is often the initial point of contact for guests and/or clients and as such it sends the all-important first impression about you, your home or business.

A generic sign will serve its purpose, it will inform, but it is hardly likely to impress. A poorly designed sign will serve to confuse. A poorly maintained sign will alarm. Clearly; signs are important.

My signs are custom designed to both impress and inform. Expertly crafted they not only enhance the location, they portray a message of quality and individuality.

Unlike wooden signs once installed they require practically no maintenance - they don't peel or rot, they do not attract insects or woodpeckers, wasps or termites. They don't need painting and they cannot be blown down. And unlike plastic signs ... well, they're not plastic. Enough said!

I carve any and all typefaces in any and all sizes utilizing the traditional classic V-cut or raised block lettering with sparrow-peck or bolstered background. You don't have to know what that means at this point, I can explain all your options when we meet. (However, if you continue reading this long enough you'll get to the part where I go into the various letter cutting styles.)

How do I know which design would work best for you and your situation? Simple. You call me at 970 309 2774 and we arrange a convenient time for me to meet with you. We talk, I learn about you, what you like, what you don't - I make some suggestions, I look at the site, look at the setting. Then, with all this information at hand within a few days you will receive a detailed sketch, complete with costs and timeframe. If you like what you see we move on to the next stage and the project is underway. If you have suggestions that you would like to see incorporated into the final design these will be included and the plan resubmitted for your approval.

So, you see - it's really very easy to distinguish yourself in your neighborhood. All it takes is a single phone call and a few minutes of your time.

The Classic V Cut

Quite simply: nothing out shines the classic V-Cut letter. It is the epitome of elegance in stone. Comprising of two adjacent surfaces cut at an oblique angle they combine to reflect the available light in order to accentuate the delicacy of each individual letter. As the day progresses they catch and reflect the shifting daylight at varying points causing them to glint and shine. By night they subtly capture the outdoor lighting to striking effect.

Traditional hand carved lettering is a rare art these days and therefore the vast majority of inscriptions are cut into stone by means of sandblasting, which creates a U-shaped letter formed by countless millions of minute sand particles blasted at the surface of the stone until a letter is formed. The resulting pitted crater-like letters are then usually painted black.

No doubt there is a place for sandblasted signs - but not when it comes to high quality masonry. A hand carved classical V-Cut sign speaks volumes about you ... your company or residence. It elevates you from the crowd and projects a favorable and lasting impression.

The Raised Letter

The term 'raised letter' is somewhat misleading in the letter itself is not raised at all, rather the surrounding stone is cut away to create letters that would appear to be raised above the rest of the stone. This method of letter cutting makes for a bold statement casting as it does its own shadow on the surface of the stone. It also allows for a variety of backgrounds - two of which are illustrated in the adjoining sketch. 'Sparrow Pecking' is a term used for a method of creating a coarse but uniform surface of tiny 'pecks'. A 'Bolstered' background is achieved by working the surface with a broad chisel known as a 'bolster' leaving behind a finely grooved and slightly irregular surface.

Although these two backgrounds account for the majority of raised lettering there are practically limitless possibilities for what can be achieved. The purpose of creating a contrasting background is primarily to make the smooth surface of the letters stand out even more, but there is no reason why the formula might not be reversed - or that the letters be carved in the shape of animals, plants or food! As with all aspects of high quality masonry the possibilities are practically limitless; bounded merely by the aspects of structural integrity, feasibility, good taste ... and the borders of our imaginations.
